Having spent the early years of his life in the northern reaches of Ontario, Canada, future Dr. Michael McCormick and family moved to Hudson, just north of Tampa when he was 15 where he graduated from Hudson Senior High School lettering in tennis and playing on the varsity team.
He received his Bachelors degree from the University of South Florida, Tampa campus, majoring in Chemistry and Biology. While attending USF he was active in sports, including golf and tennis, and worked part time throughout his four years there. In his junior year he was hired as a Resident Assistant in the dormitory where he lived.
Dr. McCormick was accepted for medical schools in Chicago, Cleveland and San Francisco, ultimately choosing to continue his education at the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco for the next four years, receiving his Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine. Among his accomplishments in San Francisco he was selected for and spent a significant portion of his 3rd year as a volunteer physician at The Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic as well as rotating through San Francisco General Hospital’s emergency room service and infection wards.
Upon graduation he decided to return to the warmer climate of Florida and completed his surgical residency in the Fort Lauderdale area at Doctor’s General Hospital.
In 1986 Dr. McCormick relocated to Englewood where he took over a retiring doctors practice. Over the years the practice has expanded to include four doctors and offices in Venice, Englewood and Murdock/Port Charlotte & Boca Grande. He is among the first physicians in the country to adopt and practice the Endovenous Laser techniques for varicose veins and one of the first podiatric surgeons nationwide to become a practicing Phlebologist (vein specialist). He is Board Certified in Foot & Ankle Surgery by The American Board of Podiatric Surgery, a Fellow of The American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons, is a member of The American Podiatric Medical Association, The Society for Vascular Surgery, credentialed as Registered Phlebology Sonographer by Cardiovascular Credentialing International, and is a member of The Florida Podiatric Medical Association.
In his 36 years of serving the local community Dr. McCormick has been Chief of Surgery at Englewood Hospital with a seat on the Medical Executive Committee, holds or has held surgery department positions at Venice Regional Hospital, Englewood Hospital, Peace River Hospital, and Surgery Center at St. Andrews where he long served as Chairman of The Board of Governors. Dr. McCormick was the first podiatric physician to be accepted as member to the Sarasota County Medical Society and was a longstanding member of their Board of Directors, participating in numerous fund raising, educational, social and political events.
In his free time Dr. M enjoys golf, pickleball, flying his twin Cessna, sailing and spending time in the Florida Keys catching lobster and fishing. He is married with one son.
Dr. McCormick has recently fully retired from practice.
